"Any idea when you're speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise desires to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have also petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious something is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy nominees.

Like all the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their visuals frequently feature them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "It is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to start a band."

"So everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group are speaking from home, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics detail departures and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a new sound – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "I've said it, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

But the sister act will consistently be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
